And the winner is....

It is 10 a.m. Thursday morning and the suspense has been killing me!  Really, I woke up 3 hours before my alarm was going to go off and I couldn't get back to sleep.

Thanks for participating and doing such a great job rallying your friends to vote on your ideas!

2nd place is: Karin with 200 votes.  Pale pink and peach formal ballet session - with a long white romantic era tutu at Sleepy Ridge with beautiful hard wood floors with the big window of light streaming though.

and 1st place, with 216 votes, is Kristian.  Rock climbing trash the dress session.

There was a little bit of confusion about whether to comment or like and a few people had trouble finding the post, so I'd like to give a free session to both of you!  Congratulations.  Both great ideas and we look forward to an exciting session!

And as a walk down memory lane, Kristian was my little sister's roommate several years ago.  We did a session of all the roommates so they could send Christmas cards.  Wow, that was a long time ago.

And when Karin got married last year, we did a bridal session at Thanksgiving point.  But no ballet!  I'm sure the dance photos will be beautiful.

Congratulations, and thanks again!

Contest Update!!

Just a quick update!  We've decided to move the cutoff time back 4 hours, to 10am MST, as I that is when I will get to my office and have access to my computer to count the votes.  It's been a close contest, and while we have two entries with over 100 votes each, it is still anybody's ball game.  Stop by and vote on your favorite idea!

Remember, to vote, go to our Facebook page, see the post about the contest and "like" one of the 10 (actually 11, oops!) comments below the post.  The comments start with "Idea # _, then the person's name".

This has been so fun to run.  I loved seeing all the ideas we got, and it's been great to see the support that each person has rallied.  Good luck to everyone, and we'll announce the winner after 10am tomorrow!

Family Photos

Thank you so much for all the submission in our contest.  We have chosen the top 10, and from now until Thursday morning, you can vote on our Facebook page.

And now, today's post:  a mini session of a mother with her 4 kids at a park.  This location was dynamite!  It's the Novell Children's Discovery Park in Pleasant Grove.  Made me want to move to Pleasant Grove when I have kids.  A great place for photos, but also just a great place to play!!  Amy wanted to do these photos as a Christmas present for her husband.

My favorite thing about this shoot was how much they loved to laugh!  Amy is a wonderful mom and it's just awesome to see such a happy family.

See more of their photos here.

Sleepy Ridge Weddings

In preparation for the Provo Bridal Fair a while ago, Sleepy Ridge asked me to do some updated promotional photos for them to display.  Being that I love shooting there and the more people that choose to have their wedding reception at Sleepy Ridge will generally mean the more weddings I get to shoot there, I was happy to!

This will be just a short post, but I wanted to share three of my favorites from the session:  First a fun night shot that shows off their brand new patio set up.  As I have stressed before, lots of lights make for great photos as the party gets later.  They help with depth, texture, and color in the background.

Next we've got a detail shot from the setup in the Sunset Room upstairs.  Note the lights on the trees helping give interesting texture that gives life to the photo, and the gorgeous flowers and linens that they have there.

Finally a bit moodier shot of the Grand Ballroom section of the Sunset Room.  Love the wood floors, the high vaulted ceilings, and of course that chandelier!  I could hang out in this room and shoot forever...

Charity Mini-Shoots

This Saturday, October 29th, we have 10 spots open for mini-sessions!

Family of four

Now 4 years ago, the first photos I had taken of Thomas and myself were done during a fall charity shoot.  Scott Jarvie was giving to some great cause that I don't remember, but I remember that I loved the photos!  (Aren't we adorable?)

So I have a soft spot in my heart for charity photo sessions, and when I came across a cause that I found worthy of my time, I decided I want to give back.  David Perry and his wife are adopting a baby and you can read all about it here: http://www.positivelyperry.com/   100% of the proceeds Saturday will go to them.

So this is what we're doing.  $100 for a mini-session.  This can be family photos, engagements, kids, headshots, Halloween costumes, or whatever you can think of!

What?
20 minute shoot with me
10 digital images emailed to you after two weeks
Extra photos will be available for purchase if desired
Groups of more than eight will need to reserve 2 mini-sessions

Where?
Nielson's Grove Park in Orem
This is the park just past Wal-Mart

When?
THIS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29th
10:30 am to 3:30 pm - 20 minute sessions, scheduled every half hour.

How?
Contact David Perry at 801.898.8985 or dperry@davidperryfilms.com.
Once he confirms an open spot, you can go to www.positivelyperry.com and pay online to reserve your time spot. First come, first served.

We hope to see you there!

Devereaux Mansion Reception

The Devereaux Mansion has got to be one of the coolest reception locations in Salt Lake City.  It's in the very heart of downtown, right next to the Gateway Mall, and you could walk by it without hardly even noticing.  It's far enough back from South Temple that it feels set apart and private, and it is one of the most gorgeous pioneer-era homes I have ever seen.  Here are a few of my favorite detail shots from Kara and Chris' wedding reception there.

Thomas worked in a cabinet and carpentry shop for a couple years when he was in college, and he kept freaking out about all the woodwork in the mansion.  I don't know much about moldings or other things like that, but I do know it was all fabulous!

Not much beats an awesome patio for an indoor-outdoor reception.  I thought this location had the perfect mix of space inside and outside.

The catering from Temple Square Hospitality was superb.  Truly amazing food....

Cool place, cool day, cool clients. Stay tuned for the rest of the photos from the reception.

The First Look

Brides often ask me how we get such cool sunset shots for wedding pictures.  There isn't usually enough time worked into the wedding day schedule to get photos like this:

So the answer?  Formals.  Groomals. Some people call it a pre-shoot.  Or as one of my favorite clients called it (We took a poll about two years ago), the Prenuptial Vanity Session.  She said, “You could always be brutally honest: “Prenuptual Vanity Shots: I wanna have lots of ammo when I show my exes and frenemies how hot my man is and how good I looked in that dress. BONUS! After you’ve had five children, you’ll have proof that you once did, in fact, wear a size 2.”  But whatever you call it, it is the answer for everything.  It is a bridal session where the groom comes along.  You get beautiful wedding photos without trying to cram it all into your wedding day.

Then the second question is often "But that means he sees me in my dress before the wedding.  People actually do that?"  The answer is, well, yes they do.  The tradition behind not seeing each other before the wedding is not as commonly followed.  I've heard it was originally a way to prevent the groom from backing out in arranged marriages, but it doesn't matter the reason, some cultures hold on to it much more closely.  So here's our compromise: The First Look.

At the beginning of the "pre-nuptial vanity session", we stage a moment before they've seen each other in wedding attire - The groom stands with his back to the bride as she walks up, turns him around, and they take a few minutes in their own little world.

...Then, when they are ready to move on, they let me know and we get started with the rest of the shoot.

Kara and Chris at La Caille:

Kandis and Greg at Sleepy Ridge (Sometimes, especially with LDS brides, we show the bride and groom exchanging rings as part of the first look):

Kirra and Brandon at the Capitol Building:

One of my biggest regrets from my own wedding is that we did an entire session of bridal photos instead of a formals session.  Really, over a hundred photos of just me!  It's wonderful for some people, but I'd rather have more photos with my husband to choose from to hang in my house.  (Though in reality those of you who know me know that I have photos of my clients up instead.)  We have photos from our wedding day, but if only someone had told me that Thomas could be part of the bridals...
